Mae Jennings Scholarship Recipients

Miss Jennings was an active farmer and lived in the farmhouse where she was raised in Hillsville, Carroll County , Virginia until the time of her death.  A 1939 graduate of Radford College , Miss Jennings taught biology in Carroll, Rockbridge and Montgomery counties for 31 years. Before her death, Mae Jennings made known her wish to provide perpetual scholarship opportunities to deserving students.  Her commitment to academics was the impetus in her establishment of this scholarship in 1997 which was created to help students from Carroll County and Radford City high schools.  A dedicated educator, Jennings established this scholarship for students who consistently have given their best in all their academic endeavors. The four-year scholarship gives each student $1,000 per year.

Radford High School Recipients

Emily Bland was a member of the art and French clubs at Radford High School . She served as business manager and photographer for the school’s yearbook. Emily is interested in anthropology and Appalachian studies at RU.

Emily Gore was an active member of the RHS high school Student Council Association, Student Government Association and National Honor Society.  She is a pianist and provided piano accompaniment for the RHS Choir during concerts and festivals. In addition, Emily was a member of the Southwest Virginia Aquatic team.

Jesse Sutphin was a member of the RHS marching band. He plans to major in computer networks at RU.

Carroll County High School Recipients

Georgina McCombs was a member of the National Honor Society, the Science MACC team and color guard at Carroll County High School . She plans to major in information system technology at RU.

Daniella McMillian was a chorus member at CCHS and was selected all-state this year and was all-district for two years. She plans to join a choral group at RU.

Sierra Taylor was a member of the National Honor Society and SADD and played varsity soccer, softball and volleyball at CCHS. In the community, she serves as a volunteer little league softball coach. Sierra plans major in psychology at RU.
