A generous $2 million donation by The Saint Albans Foundation will assist in development of RU's Business Technology Park.
The park, located on 78 acres in Pulaski County, is the current site of Saint Albans Psychiatric Hospital, owned by Carilion Health System. The Saint Albans Foundation was created in 1977 and since then has funded various initiatives throughout the New River Valley. In 2001 the organization received the RU Foundation’s Partners in Excellence Award for significant contributions to programs at the university including brain research, gender studies, healthcare and business and economics.
"We’re extremely pleased with what this gift will do to jumpstart our plans for the Business Technology Park," said Charles Wood, vice president for university advancement. "Equally important is the trust and faith the Saint Albans board has placed in RU's commitment to the future growth of Southwest Virginia," Wood added.
Jerry Kopf, executive director of the Business Technology Park, said "the park will provide potential business partners with the kind of expertise many small and mid-sized companies need to succeed." In return, Kopf said, "our faculty and students will get the opportunity to use their knowledge and expertise to further enhance the educational process."
Recently six members of the Saint Albans Foundation Board of Directors joined the RU Foundation Board. They are: Ann Hlusko, Dr. William W. King, Tom McCarthy Jr., Virginia Ousley, Dr. Winsdon Pound and Dr. Flo Graham.
According to Barbara Turk, president of the Saint Albans Foundation and a member of the RU Foundation Board of Directors, the "partnership between the two groups is one that will greatly benefit our community for years to come. Over time we've shown how community groups finding common ground can produce worthwhile initiatives. This certainly is one," she added.
