What are some of the financial instruments used in planned giving?

"There are numerous instruments for making a planned gift," says Director of Planned Giving Jan Clarke. "I would like to understand what potential donors hope to achieve, and determine how their goals fit with our marketing plan." Planned gifts are used in a number of different programs and needs at RU. Set up a consultation with Jan today.

LIFE INCOME GIFTS
Gifts of appreciated property can generate an income for you, another beneficiary, or both. Tax benefits are calculated for the following instruments using age of donor and assets used:

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST
Property or assets can stay in the family, while your gift reduces estate taxes and supports RU.

RETIREMENT PLAN GIFTS
Remainder interest in IRA, 401k and 403b plans can be designated to provide an income stream to loved ones and ultimately benefit the university at substantial tax savings to the donor.

NON-TERM LIFE INSURANCE
Designating RU as a beneficiary of a paid-up policy or a new policy helps the university's future endowment and provides you with a tax deduction.

BEQUEST
You can reduce inheritance taxes by designating in your will specific gifts of cash, property or a percentage of the remainder of your estate.

REVOCABLE TRUSTS
Trusts can be established to benefit donor and/or others, and ultimately Radford University. Donor retains right to revoke the instrument.
