When Mary Ann Ellis McClure '61 of Madison, West Virginia, is called to substitute for the Boone County School system, she carries something into the classroom that she has successfully been trying to pass on to her own children -- pride in her work and a drive to help others. McClure's recent major gift to her alma mater will help pave the way for others to follow her example.
Her gift will benefit the College of Education and Human Development Dean's Innovation Fund, the Foods and Nutrition Program and the Bonnie Hurlburt Student Union building project. McClure earned her Radford degree in education, while her son, Mark '90, graduated from the College of Business and Economics, and her daughter, Laura '00, graduated with a major in foods and nutrition from the Waldron College. Both Mark and Laura went on to earn master's degrees.
"I love Radford and I want to see all of the students do well," McClure says. "Radford has a great environment for learning because of the class sizes and it offers so much to each student," McClure said.
Always a generous contributor to the university, McClure has also given to such projects as the Waldron Hall bench and brick program, financially supporting the RU Magazine and contributing to various academic scholarships.
"Mrs. McClure's gift is a prime example of not only leaving, but living, a legacy," says Charles Wood, vice president for university advancement. She gave the gift in honor of her son, daughter, and daughter-in-law who are also Radford alums. The gift will support several different colleges and initiatives and will benefit many generations of RU students.
It comes as no surprise that McClure continues to support her alma mater. After all, her family has always been known for their tartan pride, another gift McClure passed down to her children. She was a member of the Highlander Marching Band and Mark was a cheerleader captain and member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. Laura was a member of the Sigma Kappa Sorority during her years at RU. Mark's wife, Joanne Orlando McClure '91, was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority at RU.
McClure family members are strong advocates of sorority and fraternity involvement among RU students and believe student involvement in campus life is a key to academic and professional success.
