Eric Young earned a prestigious Arts Society Scholarship during his freshmen year. The Arts Society provides money for scholarship support for students in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
Young did not think twice about attending RU, even though he resides more than 500 miles away in the small New Jersey town of Westhampton. "I came here and everyone was so nice."
Now a junior majoring in Instrumental Music Education, Young's decision to enroll in RU was also heavily influenced by music professor Mark Camphouse. "I had a good audition with him, the school was really flexible, and they gave me a lot of personal attention. I love the school of music because it's hands-on," Young said.
Another RU music education professor, Marilyn Meador, has also influenced him. "Dr. Meador is so knowledgeable, and is the heart of the music program," Young said.
"Eric Young demonstrates an unusual level of energy and dedication to music and to learning. He is a young man in whom Radford University can take pride," Dr. Meador said.
Young plays the flute, saxophone and piano, but clarinet is his forte. "I've been giving private clarinet lessons for two years now in my own studio," he said. Young also teaches clarinet and flute for the RU sponsored Community Arts School, and is a PRAXIS II tutor, a test required for teaching licensure. He tutors students studying First Year Music Theory. He was president of the freshmen honor society, Alpha Lambda Delta, during his first year.
Young, who has a 3.7 overall GPA, also serves as a music education representative, an Appalachian Arts and Studies in Schools mentor, and is president of the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference.
Young plans to attend graduate school and hopes for a teaching fellowship after his undergraduate studies are complete in May of 2004. "I am looking to teach because there is no greater feeling than to see a child learn and excel," Young said.
Scholarships like that awarded by The Art Society recognize gifted students and encourage them to continue to excel. RU as well as the Radford community and hometowns benefit, too, when a student like Eric succeeds. Invest wisely -- support a student today.
